Learning tarot may seem daunting but it's a journey anyone can begin on their own. With the right deck, a bit of practice, and the right resources, you’ll be reading tarot cards on your own in no time. Here’s how to get started.

I learned tarot in an in-person class but yes, you can absolutely learn tarot on your own.
There are many self taught tarot readers out there but the most challenging aspect can be knowing where to start. Here’s a guide to help you on your way.
Choose Your Deck
Start with a beginner-friendly deck like the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot. Its imagery is rich and it’s used in most tarot literature, making it easier to follow along with learning materials.
Familiarise Yourself with the Cards
The tarot consists of 78 cards - the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. Spend time getting to know each card. Look at the images, digest their meanings, and see what they bring up for you.
Learn Basic Spreads
Begin with spreads like the one-card pull or the three-card spread (Past, Present, Future) to practice your interpretations.
Keep a Tarot Journal
Keep a note of your readings, impressions, and any patterns or insights you observe. This helps track your progress and deepens your understanding.
Practice Regularly
Consistency is the key here. Practice reading for yourself, friends, or even fictional characters to build your confidence. Just keep practising.
Engage with the Tarot Community:
Join forums, online groups, or attend local tarot meet ups to share insights and learn from others.
Tarot Books and Videos
Books are also helpful. One that's popular in the tarot community is Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. It provides an in-depth look at each card, exploring both the symbolism and the practical aspects of reading. It’s a great companion for tarot newbies. Also check out YouTube where you’ll find a host of channels aimed at beginners.
By taking a step-by-step approach and immersing yourself in the cards, you’ll avoid overwhelm and instead build a strong foundation in tarot reading, developing both your intuition and interpretative skills over time. Happy reading!
